What is a Foley Artist?

They are people who recreate sounds for movies, videos, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. They have viewing screens and props and sound recording pieces of equipment in their studio. 

    What is Foley Art?

  •  Foley is a unique sound effect techniques that involve creating and "performing" everyday sounds in Films. Foley Artists create these sounds in a recording studio during post-production. 
  • Founder - Jack Foley - the sound effects who developed and shaped the techniques.
  • Foley effects work both with and to replace the film sound recorded on set, which is known as the field recording. Most scenes use a combination of field recordings and foley effects.  

    The 3 Types of Foley Sound:

  1. Feet: the most common. Creates the sound of footsteps, those are more difficult to accurately capture while shooting a scene. The use varies of shoes and floorings.
  2. Movement: Like the sound of people brushing past each other, is a subtle sound effect that enhances a scene. 
  3. Specifics: Are any sounds that are not movement or footsteps, like a phone or a door creaking. 
  4. Footsteps - it's done by reproducing the sound of footsteps by wearing varies of different shoes and walking on different kinds of surfaces to fit the perfect character.
  5. Movement - this is very important as the details is required. Even the smallest movement, like a person crossing their legs with jeans on, needs to make a sound. 
  6. Props - Foley artist Marko Costanzo used leaves to create the swirling sound of the witch from the movie called Into The Woods. He also used the cracking of celery to create the sound of breaking bones in the movie called The Big Lebowski.

Foley sounds are merely under the theme of diegetic sounds or the sound within the world of a film. The people who worked as A Foley Sound Artist uses lots of equipment or even random items which perfectly fits the film. And they always create them originally.
