German Expressionist Cinema

During what period did German Expressionism appear in cinema?

  • Great expressionism is a particularly artistic style that first appeared in poetry and theatre at around 1919-1931.  It became popular in the film 10 years later after WW1. It partly comes from German Romanticism and gives a subjective view of the world.
  • German expressionist filmmakers used visual distortion and hyper-expressive performance to show their inner turmoil, fears and desires of that era. They reflect the inner conflicts of its 1920s German audience by giving their woes an inescapably external presence. By rejecting cinematic realism, expressionist films showcase dramatic, revolutionary interpretations of the human condition.
