Discover Your Film Guru

Sunday, Nov 1 - class focus
  • Complete the 'Discover your film guru' activity, continuing to add to the list of useful sites for filmmaker interviews above.  This is a blog entry that should be appearing on your blog in the coming 24 hours!
  • Select a 30-ish second section of one of the without-sound cartoons (posted in a message above), create a list of the actions for which you want to create sounds for then explore, experiment and record. Edit together ready for sharing in class one week from today (Nov 7th). Place a copy of the clip in your personal teams files folder.
Remember to capture screenshots as you edit and other images (a friend might take a close up photo while you're capturing a sound for example) as you are exploring to support your portfolio journal and reflections.

What is your favourite film (or one of your top films)? Why? In terms of film elements, what is it that really makes an impression on you? Be specific.

I personally don't have a favourite film, however, I do like films that are related to Adventurous, Romance, and Comedy genres. For Example:
  • Adventurous - Wonder Women
  • Romance - The Notebook
  • Comedy - Johnny English
As an example we will take The Notebook. a Romance and Drama film, Is one of the most-watched and enjoyable movies I've ever watched. Why? Because the protagonists have very strong character development. However, it tends to get negative reviews of the film, perhaps a film romanticizes toxic relationships and promulgates an unhealthy culture of jerk worship. But I enjoy it!

It’s over the top, energetic and fun. The message, while it's an achingly tender story about the enduring power of love, a story of miracles that will stay with you forever. It makes you believe in that true love and makes you believe. That it's yours no matter what happens. It teaches you never to give up on the person you love. And this narrative storey entertains the audience as it's satisfying. Visually, I enjoy the film. The costumes suit the era and the characters specific situations. Additionally, I find the sound design in combination with the editing and cinematography is particularly effective in creating the experience of viewing the film.

2.       Who is responsible for the things that really work for you in your chosen film? Identify at least one of the ‘film portfolio roles’ Sound Designer, Director, Editor, Cinematographer, Screenwriter. This will become an inquiry for that role.

The last part of my example response, above, is rewritten here to include this ‘who’ information:

Visually, I enjoy the film. Nick Cassavetes has used very good props and framing through the film. Additionally, I find the Narrative structure and cinematography as very clear and structural. The cinematography Robert Fraisse is particularly effective in creating the experience of viewing the film.

Conclude with a reflection:

This is not just another romance/drama movie. The Notebook has particularly driven me to find the type of man depicted in the movie. Towards the romance, there's a huge gap between the statues where the boy (Noah) is a lower class, and girl (Ellie) is a higher class than him. This shows the dedication of how strong their passion towards each other is unbreakable. And they chose not the society and environment they're surrounded judge them. Referencing their history together still sticks as strong as her memory would lose.

I didn't reference a lot, due to I've already done a similar study of The Notebook
